Milk Schmilk

I give you a situation: The people at the National Academy of Science have found a problem with the nation's milk supply that terrorists could potentially exploit. What would you do if you were in charge of this sort of thing?
1. Read the scientists' report and fix the security holes
2. Ban the report.
Easy decision, yes? The Department of Health and Human Services doesn't think so. They've asked the NAS not to publish the article.

Irony: since this has drawn the attention of the press, more people will read about how to contaminate a milk supply than ever would have if the HHS hadn't stepped in. Be sure to read the third paragraph from the bottom for details.

I love that they're pissed about this, but nobody had a problem when CNN reported how most cargo containers coming into the country weren't inspected.

They even had a quote along the lines of , "if you want to smuggle a bomb into the US, cargo containers are the way to go". I blogged on it the other day.

You're right - the whole situation is ridiculous.

The logic, and it makes sense, is that if the news agencies know it, the bad guys know it already. Also, we are an open society. It is part of the essence of who and what we are. I approve of that.

As for the solution to the milk problem, people shouldn't be drinking cow's milk anyway. It's very bad for you.

Yesterday, Time Magazine had an article about our unsafe nuclear plants..

I'm really confused. Why was the NAS article targeted? Is it because people would raise too much fuss if the administration went after Time magazine and the like, but nobody really follows science?
