The Most Uncontroversial Bill...Ever
NYTimes notes that Florida's new sex offender bill has "broad bipartisan support." Well, yeah. Who's going to stand up against a sex offender bill?
The Florida legislature will almost certainly pass a measure to crack down on sex offenders by 1. requiring prison terms of at least twenty-five years for certain offenses and 2. introducing constant electronic tracking.
It's the sentencing policy that's making me pay attention. Yes, it took a nine-year-old girl getting assaulted and buried alive by a repeated sex offender for people to say "hey, maybe registration isn't enough. And hey, maybe sex offenders should get more than five years." (the guy who killed Sara Lunde was a convicted rapist who'd served five years in prison for raping an adult.) Five years. I think that rape is a little more serious than music piracy, don't you?
The US Congress is also getting involved. A bill is currently going through the House that would require all states to keep better tabs on their sex offenders.

Bring it back? Who did it in the first place?
My gawd, what really burns me up about sex offenders is that they're most likely to repeat when they get out. My only hope is that this bill does not allow them the chance of parole. This whole spiel about "tracking" them is nonsense: if you don't feel confident letting them out of jail, then don't let them out of jail.
