A democrat who is for more jail time

I don't understand. It's only with the very recent Cindy Sheenan story that the press has acknowledged that people are protesting the Iraq War. But here we have news reports about how hard it is for released sex offenders to find better housing?

The above article is about Steven Elwell, 34, who served one year for having sex with a sixteen-year-old girl. (She was his student too, so no, he couldn't have used that lame "I thought she was eighteen" excuse.)

You know, he has a point. We don't have "murderer-free housing" or "no embezzler zones." That's because we don't release murderers and embezzlers after one goddamn year. Elwell should count his blessings because under the current legal system, sex offenders have a pretty schweet deal. It's the only class of crime with no excuses--you can't rape somebody accidentally, or you can't rape somebody because you really need the money and otherwise you'll starve to death or something--and it's the only class of crime with so many breaks, so many second chances.

Laws regulating where sex offenders can live are probably unconstitutional. So let's get rid of them and do what we should be doing: putting sex offenders in jail for longer.
