Full of shit?
Donald Rumsfeld claims that the US is winning in Iraq. Yeah yeah, laugh it up. But is Rumsfeld really full of shit? After all, if we don't have a pull-out date, we can stay there as long as we goddamn want to. And if we're there long enough, statistically, things will eventually swing our way so that we can "win" this thing. It might take five or six years, that's all--and I think that's the real issue. It's not "can we win", it's "what will it take to win..and are we willing to do it?"
Is the government willing to spend the billions and billions of dollars? More importantly, are people willing to fight this war? Judging by the recruitment problems, I say no. And pretty soon, people are going to start calling bullshit on this Patriot Act. Secret databases on airline passengers? Another database of high school students that the Pentagon keeps for recruitment purposes. Library records? Excuse me?

We stayed and stayed and stayed in Viet Nam...but it didn't work.
Flag amendments, homes seized, as you point out, airline data bases, over zealous recuitment while they shout: the draft will never come back. Go after what you read..for crissakes...
Crazy...we are losing the big war - the war of freedom.
About Viet Nam: true.
I have a theory that there is only X amout of freedom in the world. Now that the Iraqis are free, there's a lot less to go around, hence the Patriot Act.
And don't you just love the name of that act. What a stroke of brilliance...who would vote against anything with patriot in the title?
What next, the "I LOVE AMERICA" act?
