More about Pat Robertson

I have complained numerous times that America gives the religious right more power than they deserve. But I didn't realize how bad it really was until the Pat Robertson story came out.

On his television show The 700 Club, the reverend Pat Robertson said that the United States ought to have Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez killed. (Isn't The 700 Club a religious show? Why were they talking about South American politics?) Due to one offhand comment by Pat Robertson, the Administration put out a disclaimer stating that no, we're not going to assassinate the President of Venezuela. Not very many other private citizens are that influential. Would any other television personality have warranted a disclaimer put out by the White House?

Are you fearful? Those bad old Christians are coming after you!

Seriously, don't you think that Christianity has been under relentless attack by the left for decades? Is it really so shocking that those who believe in God are actually trying to hold on to that which they believe is right and proper?

It's not the forst politically incorrect thing that Pat Robertson has said-I'm sure it won't be the last. As for the Whitehouse's treatment-it makes you wonder if that wasn't in the plans, you know?

You know as well as I-Chavez is a problem to more than just his own people.

The left has been attacking Christianity for decades? In what way? Exactly what have the Democrats done, policy-wise, to limit the rights of Christians?

You know, that would be pretty funny if the White House really were going to kill Chavez tomorrow, but Pat Robertson went and ruined it. Nice going, Pat!

Hah! Can you imagine the name calling directed at the Reverend around the cabinet's conferenc table if that were true?

What I meant about the attacking thingy-Christian values are being attacked through our justice system education system, media, etc.

I've got views many would consider "liberal", but in some cases there has to be a line drawn. It seems to me that Christianity-and I admit that much of the blame has to lie with Christianity, itself-has been and is now being chipped away at by the left.

My child can't take his Bible to school. Can't pray in school, either. That's just a couple of rights that have been stripped from us.

I hope you recognize my right to fight back against those kinds of things.

If that's how it's happening--if your child is taking their Bible to school and the teacher says they can't have it there--then that's very illegal. That really isn't what most people mean when they want separation of church and state.

They are discouraged from doing so. I'm lucky to be living in an area-while not by any means, perfect- is a little more flexible. Probably because it is rural and in the south.

There are a lot of things that I see being attacked.
Christians are expected to accept things , nowadays, that they believe are harmful to families and society as a whole.
Things like sex on TV. Homosexuality on TV. Violence on TV. Estranged parents who sue schools to stop them from using the word "God" in the Pledge of Allegience. Organizations who try (and succeed) in having God removed from courthouses. I could go on and on.
I realize that you can turn your set off, but come on! I've been watching an awesome Britcom, recently, which has liberal views, but does not have an agenda to force them on people. "Red Dwarf"-ever heard of it? There is no reason at all-other than to persuade people to accept immorality-for the offensive content on most every sitcom on American TV.
I realize that there is a "church-state" issue. But as I see it, it has been turned around to mean the exact opposite of its intent. I mean-come on! In the very document that announced our Independence, a creator was mentioned. God was considered in the very founding of our nation. Politically, it seems to me that the drive of the left is to disenfranchise anyone who says they believe in God. Is that really healthy? Personal beliefs can't be separated from politcal actions, can they? A person's religious beliefs-whether theistic or atheistic-are still going to influence all areas of their life.
I hope you can get a little gist of where I'm coming from.
I believe in liberty. But I also believe in responsibilty.

Public school has changed a lot, then, since I was there.

I can think of another reason why we've got such drek on our TVs: people watch it. I don't think that the network execs are trying to ruin society. Why should they? Would that make more money for them?

I can't even believe that it is ruining society. There's more violence on TV now than there was in the 1960s..has violent crime gone up? There's more sex on TV..are people having more sex? I also doubt that we're gayer than we were forty years ago. (In seriousness, gay people exist in real life. Why shouldn't they be allowed on TV?)

First of all, does one have to pray out loud for the benefit of others? If not anyone can pray in school, work, or at a Rock Concert for that matter.

As for toting Bibles to school, I wouldn't think there'd be a lot of time to do extracurricular reading during a normal school day.

And, what about my child, perhaps my child is a Satanist and wants to bring a book to school about Satanism...

There are many more religions other than Christianity...even Scientology is considered a religion now.

What if my child was a Rastifarian and wanted to smoke pot in school?

It's okay for school to be just about school and nothing else.

"What if"-that seems to be a favorite phrase for those who seek to keep other's rights from being recognized.

I'm sorry-Gaydom IS more rampant. So is irresponsible sex. So is violent crime. To say these things are not any worse than 40 years ago is tantamount to putting one's head in the sand-come on!

If I'm not mistaken, a book on satanism is not prohibited.

Smoking pot in school? Come on! You can do better than that.

If others want to participate in an oral prayer-why aren't they allowed to do so? Can't some spiteful atheist or person who is not a Christian "opt out" and go outside the room? It seems that this would be about the same as switching the channel on the set when there's something you don't want to watch.
So, I must recognize your concerns about the Christian religion, but you don't seem to feel the need to recognize my concerns about the anti-Christian agenda.
When I hear liberals talk about "tolerance", I have to turn my head and laugh.

I'm sorry Jesusdom is so rampant.

I'd rather see homosexuals on TV than a bunch of praying Christians. I have never met a gay person I haven't liked but I have met many Christians that suck.

And I also pay taxes and vote and am entitled to send my children to public school where religious beliefs are not forced down their throats. If I had my way there would be no "under God" in the pledge...that was an add-on in the 1950s and not true to the original words.

Your comments about homosexuality elrod are disturbing. As another blogger said elsewhere, if you don't like homosexual sex then don't do it. You don't have to do it. No one has to be forced to love someone physically or mentally that they don't, can't or won't love.

Churches/temples/mosques are for prayers and school is for learning. Neat concept I think.

Violent crime has not gone up. As a matter of fact, it has gone down.
Nor has homosexuality. People are more out about it now, yes. But the Kinsey report, which came out in 1948, found that ~10% of the population is gay. We now know that it's not quite that high (more like ~5%) but the point is that being gay isn't a new thing. As for irresponsible sex, I haven't been able to find anything on that. There's been so much social change since the '60s. And we have better birth control now. I don't know how we could compare the two eras.

In regard to orally praying in class,
If your kid can pray in my kid's class, my kid can go to your church and teach everybody math.

Oh yeah...the rual south is really known for it's "flexibility." Tell that the the "strange fruit." Funny delrod.

If you don't like what's on TV. Turn it off and read the Bible.

Public school is for the public's children of all backgrounds and beliefs. It is a venue for academics...Not oral prayer. That's what church is for or Christian Schools.

Why should my kid have to get up and leave like they're an outcast? Or should we set aside five minutes to pray to christian God and allah God, and budda God all the Hindu Gods and, all the pantheitic Gods (that'd take at least eight hours just to say their names.) and and and...there'd be no time left for studying and learning - The whole point of school and furthering the future of this complex modern society.

If religion is so important to people then teach it at home or in church or in religious school. WHY is this so hard to understand?

What business does GOD have in courtrooms? Why is this a necessary thing? What does it have to do with legal cases being brought before a judge and governing body?

Remember the seperation between Church and State a gajillion years ago? It wasn't just my imagination. It really happened!

I don't want "Tolerance." I want either understanding or privacy. Keep your religious life just like your sexual life - none of my business and out of my face.

And don't say "gaydom" it's excruciatingly condescending and outs YOU as a real intolerant nonflexible religion pusher.

In this case, it's more of a pro-Palestinian, anti-Israeli thing.

Regarding anti-semitism in America,
All races / groups have stereotypes about them, but people seem to actually believe the ones about Jews. I have no idea why that is, it's just something I've noticed.

Keep what I believe to be a perversion to yourself, we'll get along fine.

Seriously, what's wrong with "gaydom"?

Are you so insecure in your beliefs about homosexuality that a word which is akin to "freedom" offends you?

I'm not a "homophobe". I'm not afraid of homos.

I'm not intolerant of "gaydom".I'm intolerant of those who flaunt it about in an attempt to force others to notice and accept them.

Kinsey? What a complete disproven idiot!

Crime rate? Give me a break. If you actually believe there is less crime in this country than during the 50s or 60s, you have a real perception problem. Or a problem with your tendency to follow the words of biased people with a clear agenda to justify yourselves.

As far as the "If this was MY site" issue-gays don't think a thing about silencing my voice while they demand to have theirs heard. I'm not making this up-I've experienced it every time I get into a debate about the perverted lifestyle.

What is it with the word "fag"? It seems that homos can use it among one-another. Why is it so offensive when someone opposed to the lifestyle uses it?

You folks are just a pile of hypocritical inconsistencies.

I'm the one who feels discriminated against.

In regard to the term "gaydom,"
I'm not sure if it's offensive. To be honest I've never heard anybody besides you say it. "Fag" though, is. Unless you yourself are one of course, then it's okay. It's sort of like the word "honky".

Perception problem? I'll say. I don't remember 1960s America, because I wasn't there. So I have to go on stats, and I think I chose pretty good ones--if you can find a source better than the US Justice Department, I would like to see it.

No wonder you are being silenced. You're telling people how pervy their lifestyle is? Not polite. I also think that a focus on perversion doesn't help your argument, for two reasons: 1. perversion is relative. I don't think it's possible to convince somebody that something is pervy. 2. perversion does not equal wrongness. Even if you did convince somebody that being gay is pervy, you still would not have convinced them that being gay is wrong/bad for society/whatever.

And they used to think it was perverted for races to intermarry -

I'm sure you are aware, men who love to call gays perverted are usually the ones that feel most drawn to homosexuality...like maybe they like guys a little too much so they put on the big effort to appear the opposite.

People secure and happy in their own sexuality don't need to worry about what other people are or are not doing in bed or anywhere else.

Blacks use the N word among themselves but I'd really like to see what would happen if you elrod chose to call someone the N word.

The only perverted lifestyle I can see is you who rather than praying, are trolling around blogs calling people names, and getting off on it.

Gay lifestyle is this: work, clean house, feed dogs, take mother to doctor, plant flowers, have friends over for dinner, wash the car.

That's the gay lifestyle.

If you're talking sex, then I have to say you should put your sexual thoughts into your own bedroom and out of other people's bedrooms.

It is rather perverted to spend so much time concerned with private issues or privates of other people.

What a lame accusation-one that I'm sure to encounter wherever I encounter a gay person. I don't like the gay agenda therefore I must be gay. What a bunch of impotent shmucks.

As i said, if gays would keep their lifestyle to themselves, I would be satisfied. In my experience, that isn't the case.

In regard to D. Elrod,

Where do you live, Castro Street? Maybe I do have a perception problem because I don't see the "gay lifestyle" (whatever that means) being paraded around everywhere I go.

(Well, except during the parade. But that's only once a year.)

Once more with feeling:

Gay lifestyle is this: work, clean house, feed dogs, take mother to doctor, plant flowers, have friends over for dinner, wash the car.

So whatever is in your imagination is just that.

Up to the bedroom door, gay agenda and lifestyle is the same as yours. Behind the door I don't know, don't ask, and we don't talk about...hetero friends or gay friends...

Now I say again, stop worrying about what happens in someone else's house and clean up your own.

Go pray.
